The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) is the professional body for people involved in housing and communities. We are a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation. We have a diverse and growing membership of over 21,000 people – both in the public and private sectors – living and working in over 20 countries on five continents across the world. We exist to maximise the contribution that housing professionals make to the wellbeing of communities.
New Savings Route to Close Gap Between Owners and Renters
Saving Gateway accounts, where the Government incentivises poorer people to save by matching their contributions, will open across the UK in 2010. CIH proposes that social landlords could collect savings from tenants in a ‘Save with Rent’ scheme and divert this into their approved Saving Gateway provider. This would simplify the process for tenants, potentially encouraging more of them to save and so help the Government meet its targets.
